How to use should and ought to for past events that didn't happen.

The sentences below talk about past events that didn't happen. Comment on each one saying it should have happened or it ought to have happened (both modals are possible in all answers).

Example:
Steve didn't finish the report.

Answer:
Steve should have finished     the report.
or,
Steve ought to have finished     the report.

1) John didn't do his homework.

John his homework.

2) She didn't telephone her mother yesterday.

She her mother yesterday.

3) They weren't at home by eleven o'clock.

They at home by eleven o'clock.

4) The bus didn't stop.

The bus .

5) He couldn't find the time to do the shopping.

6) The door wouldn't open.

7) Johnny didn't eat his vegetables.

Johnny his vegetables.

8) The phone didn't ring.

9) They didn't win the match.
