Exercise: commas in relative clauses 1.

Choosing whether to use commas.

Insert a comma in each space or leave the space blank. In brackets ( ) you are told if there is one or more thing or person.

Example:
The hotel            that we stayed in            was the best in town. (more than one hotel)

Answer:
          
  (no use of commas)

 

1) Where is the letter that I wrote last night? (more than one letter)

2) The conference which was very good finished yesterday evening. (one conference)

3) I want to read a novel that will make me cry. (more than one novel)

4) This is John who called yesterday to buy our car. (one John)

5) The pupils who usually do well at school failed their English test. (one group of students)

6) The pupils that usually do well at school failed their English test. (more than one group of students)

7) The computer which we bought only last week has stopped working. (one computer)

8) We moved into the flat that was on the ninth floor. (more than one flat)

9) This is the garage that we keep our car in. (more than one garage)

10) You should send your book to a publisher who knows the subject well. (one publisher).
